About Lacrosse Evolution


Tri State Sports and Lacrosse Evolution have partnered to present the Winter Edge Lacrosse Series.  Lacrosse Evolution has brought their skills, talents and knowledge about lacrosse to the Field House in the hopes of teaching more athletes about the sport.  Tom Slate, the men’s director for Lacrosse Evolution, brings his background from the Philadelphia Wings, The Philadelphia Barrage as well as his high school coaching experience from Downingtown East.  Mary Fran Stepek, women’s director for Lacrosse Evolution, brings her talents from Temple University, as well as her coaching skills from Villa Maria and soon to be Great Valley High School.

  1. BulletTom Slate is a highly accomplished lacrosse player and coach who also has exceptional skills as a teacher, both for lacrosse and for strength/conditioning programs spanning all sports but focusing mainly on Lacrosse. Highlights of his accomplishments include:

    Professional indoor lacrosse player for the Philadelphia Wings for 7 years; Recognized as a top defensive players in league.
  4. BulletProfessional outdoor lacrosse player for one year with Baltimore Bayhawks

    Selected to represent team USA at The Heritage Cup, the World Indoor Lacrosse competition.
  6. BulletFirst Team High School All American, and Captain of the 1992 Springfield High School Lacrosse State Champions that went 24-0.

    Graduated from West Chester University with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Health & Physical Education, Fitness Specialist and is a certified Speed and Strength coach
  8. BulletCoach Slate has been an Assistant Coach for the Philadelphia Barrage for 3 years now helping the Barrage to win back to back World Championships in 06 and 07.  Becoming the first team in Major league lacrosse history to win back to back World Championships.

  9. BulletHead coach at Downingtown East High School in his 5th season. Directed his team in 2006 to winning there 1st State Championship in school history.  In doing so became the first Player and Head Coach to win a state championship in Pennsylvania Lacrosse History.

  1. BulletMary Fran Riffel (Formerly Stepek) joined Lacrosse Evolution in March of 2005 as their event manager and women’s lacrosse director.  Mary Fran graduated from Temple University in 2004 with a BS in Sports and Recreation Management and Event Planning.  While studying at Temple University she played for their Division I Lacrosse team.  The Owls won Four Atlantic 10 Championships and made appearances in Four NCAA Tournaments, while she attended.  Mary Fran coached at Villa Maria from 2005-2006.  In addition she helped to start the girls programs in Upper Merion Township and now serves on their Lacrosse Board.  Mary Fran is now in her second year as the assistant varsity position at Great Valley High School.  In 2007 Great Valley won the SCCL League Championship.  In addition recently accepted the coaching position for the PA EXPRESS 09 team.  She is constantly involved in the lacrosse community trying to spread her knowledge.  Mary Fran has a great passion for the game of lacrosse and hopes to instill this in all of the athletes she coaches.  Mary Fran also serves on the board for the Philadelphia Lacrosse Association and recently has been named the Women’s Director of Lacrosse at Tri State Sports center in Aston, PA.
