Every year we hear stories about athletes signing contracts for incredible sums of money. From Alex Rodriguez and Kobe Bryant to soccer star Cristiano Ronaldo, professional athletes at the very top of their sports get paid handsomely. What about the younger players and journeymen who don’t make as much?

I was halfheartedly listening to ESPN the other day as I was perusing www.cabletelevision.net searching for a new TV service. But then I kept hearing “Big 3″ over and over again. It seems like every team now has a “Big 3,” or for all intents and purposes – a “super team.”
It all started with Boston’s Paul Pierce, Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen. Then LeBron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh teamed up in Miami, creating a domino effect which has led other teams like the Knicks, and, most recently, the Lakers, to create super teams of their own.
But is this good for the NBA?
While it may be good for ratings by creating intriguing television matchups, it absolutely destroys the integrity and competitive balance of the league.
In professional basketball, there is a very limited amount of premier, or superstar, talent to begin with. When you concentrate all of that talent in just a few select markets, you end up with around 4-7 elite teams 23-26 irrelevant teams. The irrelevant teams will end up playing 82 meaningless games and the fans in those (small) markets will become disinterested.
At the end of the day, professional basketball needs to take a hint from professional football. The NFL is the most popular league in the country because of the competitive balance. Each year brings new playoff teams, new contenders and new hope for struggling fanbases.
In the NBA, each year brings the same playoff teams, the same contenders and no hope for struggling fanbases.
Super teams are a super disaster.

In a time an age where americans are captivated by the athleticism and excitement of football and basketball, tennis has become the least popular sport in the United States. While tennis requires an athlete to be in exceptional shape and make very difficult athletic plays, basketball’s high flying ally-opps and football’s diving touchdown catches that fill the highlight shows are far more intriguing to Americans than a good tennis serve or return.
